No. 23 Fairfield remains the only undefeated team in the nation after surviving a series-opening scare from Siena Baseball. The Stags rallied with a pair of runs to walk-off 2-1 in the opener, before mercy-ruling the Saints 10-0 in the nightcap.
Game 1: Fairfield 2, Siena 1 (7)
Owen Wosleger blooped in the walk-off RBI single to shallow left as Fairfield (27-0) scored twice in their final at-bat in the seventh to keep their unbeaten season intact. Siena (10-18) harbored a 1-0 lead heading into the final frame behind a strong pitching effort from reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week
Connor Bovair, but an error and Wosleger's bloop was enough to rally the Stags to victory.
Bovair went the first 6 innings plus three batters in the seventh, surrendering just two hits and two runs (one earned) while walking three and striking out six in another solid performance. But he got into trouble in the final frame, as each of the first five batters reached against Bovair and
Carter Knapek.
The Saints clinged to a 1-0 advantage behind Bovair and
Evan St. Claire, who provided the lone Siena offense. The junior St. Claire hit his first collegiate homer in the third to put the Saints in front.
Michael Sansone went the distance for the Stags, allowing just two hits and the St. Claire solo homer, while striking out 11 to earn the win.
Game 2: Fairfield 10, Siena 0 (7)
Fairfield scored five times in the third and walked off for the second straight game with a pair of runs in the seventh to complete the mercy rule sweep. The Stags pounded out 14 hits, with five different batters registering multi-hit performances.
Mike Handal went 3-3 with a pair of runs scored and RBI, while providing the walk-off RBI double for Fairfield which had entered the afternoon ranked second nationally in the RPI, and has now won 28 straight dating back to last season.
Donovan Montgomery recorded two of Siena's five hits.
Jake Noviello registered the complete game win for the Stags, scattering five hits while striking out eight over seven innings.
Siena will look to bounce back Sunday in the series-ending doubleheader starting at noon.
