LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Siena Men's Lacrosse team returns to Hickey Field for the first time in 2022, as they are set to host the Providence Friars on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m.
After starting their season on the road for the first time in five years, the Saints return to Hickey Field for the first time since last year. In last year's home opener, the Saints fell to Canisius in a non-conference matchup. Their last win on opening day at home came in 2020, with a 14-12 win over LIU. Overall in season openers, the Saints are 21-37 all-time.
After an early deficit, the Siena Saints struggled in their opening game of the 2022 season last Saturday as they fell to the LIU Sharks by a final score of 14-7. LIU's Blake Behlan scored four goals and added an assist for a game-high five points, while three others had two goals apiece. The Sharks led the ground ball battle 21-19, and caused eight turnovers. Christian Watts score three goals in the effort, with
George Rusnak adding a pair of goals as well. Senior
Seth Van Schepen filled the stat sheet with a goal and an assist.
Brian Mack led the team in ground balls with five.
Providence (1-1) fell in an Ocean State Cup battle against Bryant, 7-19, on Saturday, Feb. 12. Seven different players scored for the Friars in the matchup with Jack Horrigan and Quinn McConnaughey each tallying their first collegiate goals. Richie Hughson led the Friars with four ground balls. Providence was picked to finish fifth in the 2022 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll with nine points.
The Friars and Saints meet for the 30
th time, with Providence holding a 21-8 advantage. However, the Saints have won the last six matchups, including the last game they played in 2013.
In that game, Danny Martinsen tallied five points and Matt Sharp made 14 saves as the Saints earned a 13-11 win at Providence, which entered the game amongst teams also receiving votes in the USILA Coaches' Poll. Martinsen tallied a hat trick and added two assists, while Colin Clive added a hat trick and finished with four points as did Conor Prunty. Casey Dowd won 15-27 faceoffs, picked up nine groundballs and scored a key second half goal, while Mike Generi caused a career-high four turnovers.
