Charleston Takes Two Close Contests from Baseball

Saints Fall Short of First Win of Season

Siena Baseball dropped a pair of hard-fought contests in its series-opening doubleheader Saturday at the College of Charleston. The Cougars took the opener 10-5, and rallied to walk-off in the nightcap 3-2.

Game 1: College of Charleston 10, Siena 5
College of Charleston (5-1) pounded out seven runs on seven hits in the first inning to take the series opener. Siena (0-5) fought back with four unanswered runs in the middle frames, but the Cougars tacked on three insurance tallies in the bottom of the seventh to seal the deal.

Brett Young blasted the Saints' first home run of the season in the top of the first, but the lead would be short-lived. Charleston answered back in the home half of the frame with Landon Choboy highlighting the rally with a 2-run single.

Siena got a run back in the fifth on an RBI double by Vincent Dincola, before generating their highest scoring inning of the young season with a three-run seventh. Alex Milone, who led the way with three hits, produced an RBI groundout, while Willie Schwarick added a two-out, two-run single to narrow the margin to 7-5.

But the Cougars got all three runs back in the bottom of the inning, with Cam Dean capping the scoring with a two-run single.

Game 2: College of Charleston 3, Siena 2
Tyler Sorrentino delivered a walk-off one-out, two-run double down the third base line to rally Charleston past the Saints in the nightcap. The walk-off spoiled a solid outing from senior southpaw Ben Seiler who was in line for the win, after hurling six shutout innings scattering five hits while striking out four and walking none.

Devan Kruzinski opened the scoring in the pitcher's duel with a two-run homer in the fifth. The margin held until the bottom of the seventh, when the Cougars got a run back on a Choboy blast.

Charleston put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of ninth, with Sorrentino proving to be the hero.

Young accounted for two of Siena's three hits, as Cougar hurlers Daniel Brooks and Reed Parris combined to strikeout 18 batters.

The Saints will look to salvage the weekend in the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
