LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Siena Saints put a three-game home winning streak on the line Saturday afternoon in the second game of a three-game homestand when they face off with the Iona Gaels at the UHY Center at 2 p.m.
The Saints will be celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day during the game, offering a pregame behind-the-scenes experience for girls ages 4-12. Those wishing to still sign up for Saturday's experience can do so via the link provided.
On a night where they raised more than $4,300 in support of breast cancer awareness in the Capital Region, the Siena Women's Basketball team also raised a win in the UHY Center Thursday night. The Green and Gold defeated the Monmouth Hawks by a final score of 61-54 in the 21st annual Pink Zone game.
Reigning MAAC Co-Player of the Week
Rayshel Brown led the Saints with an 18-point, 10 rebound performance for her first career double-double. Brown stuffed the stat sheet, also adding two assists, two blocks, and two steals. Senior
Margo Peterson scored 16 points, going 4-for-5 from behind the three-point line. Fifth-year
Selena Philoxy also had a strong showing with 12 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Both Brown and Philoxy were a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
Graduate student Stella Clark was the top scorer of both teams, pouring in a game-high 21 points for the Hawks. Ariana Vanderhoop chipped in 10 points, while sophomore Belle Kranbuhl grabbed 13 rebounds and dished a team-high four assists.
Siena and Iona meet for the 74
th time, with the Saints holding a 44-20 advantage. The Green and Gold have won six of the last eight matchups, including the last two meetings. Head Coach
Jim Jabir is 1-1 all-time against the Gaels, with his first win coming earlier this year. The one loss also came at Siena - on January 18, 1990 as the Gaels would prevail 66-62 in New Rochelle.
The last time the two teams met was back on Jan. 10, as the Saints held the Gaels scoreless for the final 7:15 of the game while scoring 14 unanswered points en route to a 56-51 victory. The win marked the first of the season, and head coach
Jim Jabir's first win at the helm of the Saints since March 10, 1990.
Brown scored six of her 19 points in the fourth quarter, also adding a new career-high in steals with six. Freshman
Imani Harris dished out a new career-high five assists, all coming in the first half. Sophomore
Margo Peterson added 12 points, with junior
Anja Knoflach scoring 10 as the three Saints in double-figures.
The Gaels saw a 14-point effort from Olivia Vazaldenos, who also added five rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Juana Camilion scored 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting on the afternoon, adding six rebounds. Ketsia Athias would grab seven rebounds to lead the Gaels in that department.
Iona (6-10, 4-7) are currently on a two-game winning streak, with wins at Rider and at home against Canisius. Juana Camilion leads the Gaels in scoring, averaging 12 points per game and 2.6 steals per game. Over their last two wins, the Gaels have won by a combined margin of 17 points each.
