Siena Baseball secured its first win of 2022 with a 9-1 victory over The Citadel in Game One of a series-opening doubleheader in Charleston, South Carolina. The Bulldogs prevailed in a 15-10 slugfest in the nightcap.
Game One: Siena 9, The Citadel 1
Seniors
Ben Seiler and
Arlo Marynczak combined on a five-hitter, and Siena (1-10) made the most of five errors by The Citadel (9-5) to earn their first victory of the year. The Saints tallied 10 hits in total, and scored seven unanswered insurance runs over the final five innings.
Alex Milone opened the scoring with an RBI triple in the first, while
Kobe Stenson added a run-scoring double in the fourth. After the Bulldogs got on the board in the home half of the fourth, the Saints slowly pulled away.
Siena manufactured a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly and a bases loaded walk in the fifth and, after adding single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, added a three-run frame in the ninth to seal the deal.
That would prove to be more than enough for Seiler and Marynczak who earned the win and save, respectively. Seiler went the first six innings allowing only one walk while striking out three, while Marynczak went nine up and nine down with six strikeouts in a dominating effort out of the bullpen.
Stenson led the way offensively in finishing with three hits, while
Brett Young scored three times. The Saints also worked a season-high nine walks.
Game Two: The Citadel 15, Siena 10
Siena cut a 10-run deficit to as little as four late, but couldn't get over the hump as The Citadel earned the doubleheader split with the nightcap triumph. Noah Mitchell went 4-5 with three runs scored, a homer, and six RBI to lead the Bulldogs' attack.
The Citadel scored in each of the first five innings, and took a commanding 10-0 advantage through four. The Saints got on the board with a pair of runs in the fifth, but gave one back in the bottom half of the frame to trail 11-2 heading into the sixth.
Siena mounted a five-run rally thanks to three run-scoring doubles and a triple to pull within 11-7. But the Bulldogs tacked on four key insurance runs in the eighth, as the Saints' three-run ninth wasn't enough.
Vincenzo Castronovo went 4-5 with a pair of runs scored and RBI, while
Devan Kruzinski was on base five times via three hits and a pair of walks. Siena's offense has come alive over the past three games, totaling 27 runs after having scored just 14 runs over the first eight games.
Fresh off its first win of the season, the Saints will look to secure their first series victory when the teams meet in the decisive rubber game Sunday at 1 p.m.
