LOUDONVILLE, NY – Fifth-year
Nicole McNeely led a charge of six unanswered goals in the final nine minutes of play as the Siena Women's Lacrosse team pulled out a 16-13 comeback victory in their home opening game at Hickey Field over the Colgate Raiders Wednesday afternoon.
McNeely scored five goals and assisted on a pair, while freshman
Grace Dobrzynski scored two goals and assisted on three in the win. Senior
Mary Soures scored a hat trick in her first game action of 2022, while
Amanda Nieman,
Laura Bonomo, and
Jordan Bentley each scored a pair as well. Junior
Sabrina Krasner entered the game in net at halftime for the Saints, making five saves on eight shots for her first win of the season.
Colgate was led by a five-point effort from Sarah Harding, as she scored four goals and added an assist. Kyra Lucey also added five points, going for three goals and two assists. Catie Lang would score twice, with four others chipping in with a goal apiece. Amelia Cunningham stopped 11 shots in net for the Raiders in the loss.
McNeely scored three of her five goals in the first 15 minutes, as both sides played to a 5-5 tie. The Raiders pulled away in the second quarter, scoring five unanswered goals amidst an 8-0 run as Siena was held scoreless. Leading 10-5 at the half, Colgate began to fall away in the third as the Saints offense got going in the third as Bentley, Soures, Bonomo, and McNeely all scored to get within three heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Nieman opened up the scoring less than two minutes in to cut the Colgate lead to two. After a Colgate goal from Lang with 11:38 to play, Siena began their run. Soures scored with 9:01 on the clock to kickstart the run. McNeely scored the tying goal with 6:31 to play, and assist the go-ahead goal to Bentley with 5:57 to play. Nieman and Soures put the finishing touches on the Siena lead, as Krasner held down the fort defensively down the stretch.
Siena was able to pull things out despite Colgate winning the draw control battle 22-10. However, the Saints outshot the Raiders 34-23 with a 27-21 spread on shots on goal. Colgate went a perfect 9-for-9 in clears, while the Saints finished 14-for-16.
The Saints return to action this weekend on Saturday, Mar. 5 as the Saints return home to take on Vermont at 2:30 p.m.
