Late Women’s Lacrosse Rally Cut Short by Vermont

Saints Fall to Catamounts in Saturday Afternoon Action

LOUDONVILLE, NY –  Despite a hot third quarter where they scored five goals, the Siena Women's Lacrosse team couldn't overtake an early deficit as they fell to the Vermont Catamounts by a final score of 13-10 at Hickey Field Saturday afternoon.

Vermont saw Riley Halloran and Meghan O'Connor each record four points on a trio of goals and an assist. Former Saint Kerry Gerety notched a three-point day with two goals and an assist, while grabbing a team-high 10 draw controls. MacKenzie Ballard recorded a hat trick as well, with four other Catamounts collecting points. Goaltender Sophie McLaughlin made five saves in net.

Siena was led by a pair of three-point days from Amanda Nieman and Grace Dobrzynski, as Nieman scored a hat trick while Dobrzynski scored a goal and tossed out two assists. Nicole McNeely and Kelly Logue each had a pair of points, with Kelsey Lane, Meghan Decker, and Jordan Bentley each getting a point apiece. Ally Mervine made six saves in the cage.

The first half would be a back-and-forth battle, as both teams turned the ball over a bunch in the first quarter. The Saints settled in throughout the second quarter, though Vermont maintained a lead into the midway point with a 7-4 advantage.

Nine total goals went onto the scoreboard in the third quarter, as Siena ended the third on a 3-0 run putting the score to 11-9 in favor of Vermont thanks to a man-up goal from Bentley with 1:30 to play in the frame. Logue made things interesting as she opened the fourth with a score at the 9:02 mark to make it a one-goal game for the first time since the first. However, the Catamounts held the Saints without a goal the rest of the way while scoring a pair to seal the deal for the win.

Vermont turned the ball over 27 times to Siena's 17, but outshot the Saints 25-21 on the game. The Saints won the ground ball battle 22-17, but fell in the draw controls 17-9.

The Saints return to action this Tuesday, Mar. at 3 p.m. when they hit the road to take on Lehigh.
