Jacksonville State swept the series-opening doubleheader from Siena Baseball Saturday night in Alabama. The Gamecocks doubled up the Saints 8-4 in the opener, and took the nightcap 7-1.
Game One: Jacksonville State 8, Siena 4
Jacksonville State (3-6) scored eight unanswered runs to rally past Siena (0-8) in the opener. The Gamecocks knotted the score with a four-run second, before forging ahead with a pair of runs in the third.
The Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a three-run second fueled by a solo home run by
Kobe Stenson and a two-run shot from
Brett Young. Stenson, Young, and
Devan Kruzinski all notched a pair of hits apiece in the contest.
But the Gamecocks responded with four runs on four hits to tie things up in the home half of the second, before Derrick Jackson, Jr. put them ahead for good with a home run in the third.
Arlo Marynczak gave Siena a chance with a solid relief effort, allowing just one hit and one run over 4.1 innings with two walks and six strikeouts.
Game Two: Jacksonville State 7, Siena 1
A four-run third was the difference as Jacksonville State took the nightcap. Two-run doubles by TJ Reeves and Jackson highlighted the frame.
Ben Seiler was strong otherwise, striking out eight and walking only one while eating up seven innings of work. Meanwhile Stenson accounted for three of Siena's five hits offensively, going a perfect 3-3 with a pair of doubles, and scored the lone run in the eighth on an RBI double off the bat of
Vincenzo Castronovo.
Tanner Jones tossed five shutout innings with nine of the Gamecock pitching staff's 16 strikeouts to pick up the win.
Siena will look to bounce back in the series finale Sunday at 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. CT).
