Matt Padre hit the go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth and added an insurance two-run double in the eighth as Manhattan took the rubber game of the series from Siena Baseball 9-2 Sunday afternoon on the campus of Pace University.
Manhattan (15-13, 6-3) scored seven unanswered runs over their final three innings at bat to take the final two games of the series after Siena (8-22, 5-4) captured Friday night's series-opener.
The Saints erased an early two-run deficit on a wild play to end the top of the fourth which pulled them even. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Vincenzo Castronovo won the footrace to the bag with the pitcher to beat out an RBI infield single to first. With the play still live and the Jaspers arguing the call, the tying run also snuck into score. Siena tried to add a third run as Manhattan threw the ball away, but the potential go-ahead run was cut down at the plate with the out going 3-1-2-6-5-2.
That would prove to be the Saints' best opportunity to take the lead, as reliever John Farley entered soon thereafter. The Manhattan hurler tossed four shutout, hitless innings of relief while walking just one to earn the win.
Meanwhile the Jaspers picked Farley up offensively, with Padre giving them a lead they would not relinquish. Manhattan added an insurance run in the seventh, before putting things away with a four-run eighth.
Siena returns to action Tuesday for a 3 p.m. non-conference contest at Central Connecticut.
