Niagara Spoils Seiler’s Sensational Effort in Extras

Senior Southpaw Sets 2022 NCAA Single-Game Strikeout Mark

Matt Ward walked off with an RBI single with no outs in the 10th inning as Niagara rallied past Siena Baseball 6-5 on Monteagle Ridge. The defeat spoiled a sensational effort from senior southpaw Ben Seiler, who set a 2022 NCAA single-game high with 19 strikeouts.

Seiler had to settle for a no-decision despite his nine remarkable innings of work, as Cole O'Connor knotted the score at 5-all for Niagara (7-26, 3-8) on a one-out RBI groundout in the home half of the ninth. Undeterred, however, Seiler bounced back to tally his record 19th strikeout on his 152nd and final pitch to send the game to extras for just the second time all season – and second time in as many days – after Siena (9-25, 6-5) survived an 8-run Purple Eagle rally to prevail 10-8 in 11 innings in the series-opener Friday.

But Niagara finished things off quickly in the home half of the 10th. A hit batsman, steal, and single off the bullpen immediately put runners on the corners, and Ward delivered with the walk-off single to center field to even up the series for the Purple Eagles.

The Saints had overcome three unearned Niagara runs in the first with a four-run second to take a lead they would hold until the ninth inning. Bryce Mordecki started the rally with a two-run single, while Brett Young capped the frame and put Siena in front with a bases loaded walk.

Young generated an insurance run thanks to some nifty baserunning to increase the advantage to 5-3 in the fourth. After beating out a potential inning-ending double play, he then purposely got caught in a rundown on an attempted steal to allow the runner to come home from third.

Vincent DiNicola led the Saints offensively with three hits, while Matt Livingston and Mordecki each added a pair of hits.

But Seiler was the unquestioned story, as the senior lefthander now holds two of the three highest single-game strikeout totals nationally so far this season. Seiler's 19 strikeouts broke the previous single-game high of 17 set by Oregon State's Cooper Hjerpe on Apr. 1 vs. Stanford. Earlier this season, Seiler set a then career-high with 16 strikeouts in a Mar. 27 victory over Saint Peter's, which is now tied with two others for the third highest single-game mark in the country in 2022.

Following a split of a pair of exciting extra inning affairs, Siena and Niagara will battle in the decisive rubber game of the series Sunday at noon.
