Niagara Takes Weekend Series from Baseball

Purple Eagles Carved Out 11-3 Rubber Match Victory

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Siena Baseball (9-26, 6-6) was unable to overcome a solid offensive push from MAAC rival Niagara (8-26, 4-8) Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of a three-game weekend series at Bobo Field in Niagara University, New York. The Purple Eagles powered their way to an 11-3 victory to cap off the weekend with back-to-back wins.

After evening up the series with a 6-5 extra-inning win on Saturday, the home team got off to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first via a pair of RBI singles, prompting an early Siena pitching change. Despite a solid five and one-third inning relief outing from Siena freshman Noah Rodriguez, the Saints could not come closer than a one-run game in the third.

Junior Matt Livingston doubled to send in sophomore Vincent DiNicola in the second inning, while DiNicola came around to score again the third off a throwing error. Niagara responded with five runs in the home half of the inning to jump out to a 7-2 lead thanks to three RBI singles and a wild pitch.

Siena cashed in once more in the top of the fifth, with redshirt-junior Brett Young bringing in senior Devan Kruzinski on an RBI single, but the Saints stranded five runners on the base paths over the final four innings. Niagara used an RBI single and a balk in the sixth and a two-run home run in the seventh to extend the lead, out-hitting Siena, 15-9, on the day.

Kruzinski, Young, DiNicola, and senior Vincenzo Castronovo each put up two hits in the loss, while freshman pitcher Billy Rozakis (0-5) took the loss in one-third of an inning on the mound. Classmate Trevor Kobryn and senior Brendan Quigley each registered a strikeout in one and one-third and one inning of relief, respectively.

After enduring an eight-game road trip, Siena will next return home to Loudonville for a six-game home stand, beginning on Tuesday, April 26 at 3 PM against Binghamton.
