LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Baseball trimmed a 10-run fourth inning deficit to as little as a single run late, but couldn't complete what would have been a miraculous comeback in a 15-14 defeat at the hands of UMass at Connors Park.
Siena (9-27) entered the home half of the fourth inning trailing 14-4, before rallying with six unanswered runs over the ensuing four innings to pull within 14-10 through seven. After UMass (18-16-1) generated what would prove to be a key insurance run to extend their lead to 15-10 in the eighth, the Saints responded with four more runs to close to the final margin in the home half of the inning. But Matt Aronson shut the door with a 1-2-3 ninth capped by a pair of strikeouts as the Minutemen held on.
The teams combined for 29 runs on 29 hits in a midweek barnburner which featured 16 different pitchers. Siena set a season-high with 16 hits in the setback, while their 14 runs scored were the squad's second highest total this season.
Dylan Judd went a perfect 5-for-5 with four RBI to pace UMass which also worked 14 walks as a team. Kevin Skagerlind and Will MacLean each tallied three free passes apiece atop the Minutemen order while combining to score seven runs.
All nine Siena batters recorded at least one hit and one run scored, with six also registering RBI. Freshman
Matt Kenney led the offensive onslaught with career-highs of three hits and four RBI, in the process tripling his RBI total from all season.
Alex Milone added three hits and a pair of RBI, while
Matt Livingston knocked in three runs.
The Saints return to action Friday when they open a three-game weekend series vs. Canisius at 3 p.m. at Connors Park.
