Four pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout and Monmouth erupted for seven runs over the final two innings to pull away from Siena Baseball 11-0 in the series-opener at Connors Park.
Dan Klepchick allowed just one base runner – a second-inning single by
Vincent DiNicola – over five shutout frames with three strikeouts to earn the win for Monmouth (23-22, 11-7). Three relievers then combined to allow just one additional hit – an eighth inning single off the bat of
Alex Milone – to shut the door for the Hawks.
Monmouth held a modest 4-0 lead through seven innings before putting things away with five unearned runs in the eighth. James Harmstead, who finished with four hits and four RBI, provided the decisive blow with a bases clearing, three-run double. Casey Caulfield added four hits of his own out of the leadoff spot in the order for the Hawks who pounded out 17 hits in total.
Siena (10-33, 7-12) will look to bounce back tomorrow and even the series when they celebrate Senior Day just prior to their noon first pitch.
