Siena Basketball Signs Icelandic Prospect Sveinn Birgisson

Saints Officially Welcome Fifth Incoming Freshman

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Men's Basketball Head Coach Carmen Maciariello has announced the official addition of the program's fifth incoming freshman for the upcoming 2022-23 season. Sveinn Birgisson, a 6-7 wing/forward from Reykjavik, Iceland has signed his National Letter of Intent, and will enroll at Siena College this summer.

"Sveinn is a skilled, multi-positional wing who has a high basketball IQ and tremendous work ethic," said Maciariello. "He adds shooting, length, and athleticism to our roster."

Birgisson is currently in his first season playing for Valur, which competes in Iceland's top league. He has averaged 3.3 points and 1.4 rebounds in 9.8 minutes of action over 23 games played this season. Birgisson attended South Iceland College.

Birgisson has previously represented the Icelandic National Team at both the 2019 FIBA U18 and 2018 FIBA U16 European Championships. He averaged 7.1 points, 4.8 rebounds. 1.8 assists, 1.1 blocks, and shot 39% from three over 25.4 minutes in eight games at the 2019 Championships.

Birgisson becomes the fifth official addition – all of whom are freshmen – to join the 2022-23 Saints. Siena previously announced the additions of freshmen preferred walk-ons Brendan Coyle and Killian Gribben last week, as well as fellow incoming freshmen Zekeriya Yigit "Zach" Tekin and preferred walk-on Mason Courtney last month.

Birgisson joins a Siena Men's Basketball program looking to build off its fourth straight top-three MAAC finish this past season.
