Mordecki Powers Saints to Doubleheader Split

Catcher Homers, Knocks in Five in Game Two Victory

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Bryce Mordecki homered and drove in five runs to power Siena Baseball to a 10-3 victory over Iona in the second game of a series-opening doubleheader at Connors Park. The Gaels took the opener 8-3.

Game One: Iona 8, Siena 3
Iona (4-38, 4-16) scored five unanswered runs capped by a three-run eighth to take the series opener. Will Jennings drove in three runs – including a pair of key RBI in the go-ahead sixth inning as well as the eighth – to propel the Gaels.

Iona led 3-1 through four, but Ryan McGee tallied an RBI single in the fifth and Vincent DiNicola blasted a solo home run in the sixth to draw Siena (10-31, 7-10) even.

However, Jim Kemp and Jennings put the Gaels back in front for good in the sixth, and Iona added three key insurance runs in the eighth to seal the deal. Brad Polinsky led the way with three of the Gaels' 12 hits, and scored twice to lead Iona.

Willie Schwarick notched a pair of hits, runs scored, and stolen bases to pace the Saints.

Game Two: Siena 10, Iona 3
Siena pounded out 13 hits and posted a pair of crooked numbers with a five-run third and a four-run sixth to put the brakes on a seven-game losing skid.

Mordecki put the Saints in front with a two-run double in the go-ahead third, with Nick Hohenstein then driving him in as well with a two-run blast. Siena put the game away in the sixth, with Mordecki providing the decisive blow with a three-run homer.

All nine of the Saints' starters reached base safely, with eight posting hits and eight scoring. DiNicola tallied three hits, while Mordecki, Hohenstein, Brett Young, and Alex Milone all added multi-hit performances.

Meanwhile, Ben Seiler went eight strong on the mound with six strikeouts to secure his third win.

The series, which was originally scheduled to be hosted by Iona but which saw the start moved to Loudonville due to inclement weather, will conclude back in New Rochelle Sunday with the decisive rubber game scheduled for noon at City Park.
