Women’s Tennis Shows Out at Colgate Invitational

Saints go 17-7 in singles, 5-6 in doubles over the two-day event

The Siena Women's Tennis team stole the show at the Colgate Invitational held on the J.W. Abrahamson Tennis Courts on Saturday and Sunday in Hamilton, NY.

Facing competition from the host Raiders, Hamilton, and even themselves in "friendly" type matches, the Saints went 17-7 in singles competition and went 5-6 in doubles matches over the two-day event.

"It was a great weekend to be a Saint!", said Siena head tennis coach John Chiaramonte. "I was so impressed with the intensity we played with every match even the ones against each other. Three teams in the doubles' semifinals and all Siena finals in the A and B draws. Everyone has improved their games and we are going to be a very strong team this season."

Siena was crowned the winners of the Singles "A" Final and the Singles "C" third place bracket, and also had both competitors reach the Singles "B" Final as well as an appearance in the final of the doubles flight.  The format of the brackets allowed for match ups to include teammates pitted against one another.

Junior Laia Giralt was a top winner, defeating Sophia Montero, of Colgate, 8-2 in the quarterfinal round before topping Carina Cristobal, also of Colgate, 8-1.  In the championship, Giralt faced off against teammate and senior Alexa Wilson and earned an 8-4 victory to win the Singles "A" flight.

In the Singles "B" flight, freshman Manuela Gomez showed out in a big way by besting Sasha Herman, of Colgate, 8-2 in the quarterfinal pairing.  The Bogota, Colombia native advanced to the final when she doubled up Gigi Bohan, also of Colgate, 8-4.  In the final, Gomez got past fellow Saint and sophomore Reegan Mullaney.

Junior Jade Gautier rallied back after a quarterfinal defeat to the Raiders' Avery Issac 8-6 by toughing out a 9-7 win over Grace Qian, of Hamilton, in the semifinals of the third-place bracket before picking up a victory against fellow Siena teammate and senior Shelby Madeiros.

In doubles competition, Madeiros and Gautier won two matches before dropping the final match 6-2 to the Colgate duo of Amelia Galin and Carina Cristobal.

Siena Women's Tennis returns to action next weekend at the ITA Regionals in Boston, MA from Friday, October 6 through Sunday, October 8 to compete against top competition from the ranks of collegiate tennis.
