While it was not the results that the Siena Men's Tennis team was seeking on day two of the ITA Northeast Regionals, the Saints found plenty of encouraging signs after four singles players and one doubles pairing advanced to the round of 64 at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on Saturday.
"We concluded fall competition today with a few competitive matches," said first-year Siena men's tennis coach
John Chiaramonte. "We will take everything we have learned this fall and use it to become stronger in the spring."
A day after the Saints' number one through four singles players and top doubles team all won, Saturday's draw came up empty in the win column as Siena fell to players from Ivy League school members Dartmouth and Yale as well as Bryant and MAAC rival Marist.
Junior
Maxwell Acri had the most competitive match on the day, stretching Bryant's Jose Davila to the limit before dropping a three-set match 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 at the singles number four draw.
Freshman
Oscar Martinez played gamely as well, pushing Marist's Oliver Thoeny into a deeper match at 6-3, 6-4.
From the number one doubles position, junior
Fabio Varella and sophomore
Zino Varouhas-Poole lost to the Dartmouth duo of Carlos Guerrero Alvarez and Xander Barber 8-0.
Varella, the Sao Paulo, Brazilian native represented Siena at the number one singles spot and dropped his match to Dartmouth's Yoriyo Onuma.
Varouhas-Poole, who transferred from Marquette over the summer, fell to Roee Benya of Yale in straight sets.
The Saints will take a break from action and will return to match competition at the Army West Point Invite from January 12-15, 2024.
