EAST MEADOW, NY – Siena Swimming & Diving truly looked in mid-season form to begin the 2023 ECAC Swimming & Diving Championships at the Nassau County Aquatics Center in East Meadow, New York on Friday.
The Saints took the pool as one of 14 regional women's programs competing, and came away in fourth place after day one action with 279 points – ahead of MAAC foes Mount St. Mary's (sixth), Iona (seventh), Marist (eighth), Manhattan (11
th), and Saint Peter's (14
th).
The Green and Gold took the pool for the 200 free relay, 400 medley relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, and one-meter diving on Friday, with preliminary rounds beginning at 9 AM and finals taking place at 6 PM.
Both top Siena relay teams turned in solid times in their respective events, with the group of junior
Kylie Carter, junior
Shaylea Triller, sophomore
Kaci Owens, and graduate student
Rory Kalac placing sixth with a time of 1:36.59 – just under a second off the school record. The team of freshman
Mea Amedio, senior
Audrey Shultz, freshman
Carsyn Ide, and Kalac logged a seventh-place finish with a time of 3:55.39 in the 300-medley relay.
Freshman
Mary Ellen Stratman's 100 backstroke split of 59.28 to begin the B team's relay was good for seventh all-time, while Amedio's time of 59.79 tied for ninth all-time.
Aside from a host of season and lifetime bests, the Saints saw freshman
Hope Ivanovich and junior
Maddie Buck qualify for the final round in the 500 free, with Ivanovich swimming a top time in the preliminary round and then following it up with the fourth-fastest mark in program history (5:05.85) to win the "C" final.
Ide qualified for the "B" final in the 200 IM, while Amedio, freshman
Alice Scalmani, and senior
Emily Sulik made the "C" final in the event. Ide turned in a time of 2:10.47 in the preliminary round to move to sixth on the top-ten list, while Amedio won the "C" final with the ninth-fastest time in program history at 2:11.42.
The 50 free finals featured a host of Saints, including Kalac in the "B" final and Triller, Owens, and Carter in the "C" final. Owens tied for the seventh-fastest 50 time in program history at 24.50 during the preliminary round, while Triller went for 24.52 to move to eighth all-time in the finals.
Both Siena divers qualified for the one-meter diving finals, with senior
Talia Spenziero taking third in the finals with a score of 229.10, and freshman
Sydney Murray finishing eighth at 173.50.
Siena will continue action at the ECAC Winter Championships on Saturday, December 2 with preliminary rounds at 9 AM and finals at 6 PM.
