Despite being without a few of its' key players, the shorthanded Siena Women's Tennis team cruised past Lafayette 6-1 on Friday at the Sportime Schenectady.
The Saints (2-4) were missing usual singles starters
Emma Boggiali and
Laia Giralt, but were able to overcome their absences through top performances from fifth-year student-athlete
Meagan Brown, junior
Alexa Wilson and freshman
Reegan Mullaney, who each won in both singles and doubles competition.
"The girls showed just how deep this team is from top to bottom," said Siena women's tennis coach
Jeff Osborn. "They came to play. Down three players in singles due to sickness and injuries, they came back after a rough start in doubles. All six courts battled and we got a good win today."
Siena have now defeated the Leopards in six of the last seven meetings dating back to 2005.
Brown and Wilson paired together at the #1 doubles spot to outlast Alyssa Perdomo and Carmen Merkel 7-5 (5). In singles play, Brown worked quickly at the #1 spot by defeating Olivia Boeckman 6-1, 6-1. Wilson earned a hard-fought victory against Perdomo 6-4, 7-6 (1).
Mullaney provided a big step in by partnering with
Maanya Viswanath at #2 doubles spot to top Boeckman and Melanie Sparhawk 7-5. From the singles #3 court, Mullaney won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 against Sparhawk.
The Leopards fell to 1-3.
Next up, Siena will play at Bryant on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. in Smithfield, RI.
