Women’s Tennis Storms Past Rhode Island

Freshman De Faber-Schumacher Takes Deciding Match in Tie-Breaker

The Siena Women's Tennis team stormed past Rhode Island 4-3 to pick up a statement victory on Sunday afternoon at Tri-City Fitness Center.

The Saints (1-2) received a big lift from one of its most experienced players in senior Maanya Viswanath, who helped provide a pair of victories, but also from one of its' newest faces in freshman Madeline De Faber-Schumacher, who battled back from an opening set loss to win in a third set tie-breaker that ultimately decided it.

With the scored evened at three apiece, it boiled down to De Faber-Schumacher's ability to rally back with a 1-6, 7-6 [7-5], 1-0 [10-6] victory against Paulina Loredo to help propel the Saints to their first win of the season.

"The girls played hard right to the end, creating a true team win today," said Siena head tennis coach Jeff Osborn.

"Madeline stayed steady and got the win for the team at six in a breaker. She was able to make an adjustment to the style of her play after the first set and was able to pull her opponent off their rhythm to push ahead and win the last two sets."

Siena improved to 3-1 all-time in their series history with URI, who represent the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Viswanath teamed with Reegan Mullaney to earn a 6-2 win at the #2 doubles spot by getting past Nikki Fernando and Klara Nelander.

Viswanath made it a sweep for her matches on the day by topping Grnja 6-3, 6-1 at the singles #5 position.

With Emma Boggiali and Shelby Madeiros registering a 6-4 win at the #3 doubles spot versus Loredo and Nadia Rajan, it gave Siena the doubles' point.

Laia Giralt put the Saints in position for the victory after she bested the #1 singles Rams' player Rajan.

Next up, Siena will go on the road to play at Buffalo (5-0) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
