The fight was fierce in the Siena Women's Lacrosse team until the very end, but their comeback bid ran out of time as the Saints fell 18-14 to #13 Army West Point on Wednesday night in nonconference play.
In a decisive third quarter, the Black Knights (7-0) took command by outscoring the Saints 6-1 in the frame. Bridget Duffy led Army with five goals while Julia Gorajek added four scores.
Siena (4-4) looked game from the opening whistle, however, as the Saints played competitively throughout the opening half. Siena tied the game on three occasions, but trailed 10-7 at the half.
Siena kept playing hard into the fourth quarter and saw three different players score at least three goals with
Rebecca Gilhooley leading the way with four goals and an assist while
Kelly Logue and
Jordan Bentley each picked up hat tricks of their own.
Mary Soures and
Katy Wangsness added two goals and one assist apiece for the Saints, who tied a season-high in goals this season.
Siena outscored Army 6-2 in the final quarter included five of the game's last six goals from Bentley, Logue, Gilhooley, Soures and Wangsness within a six-minute span.
In the cage, Saints' goalkeeper
Sabrina Krasner (4-4) was challenged consistently by a high-powered Army offense that has averaged 15.8 goals per contest. Krasner made 11 saves and made several stops with a high degree of difficulty to keep it close.
Saints were outshot 41-28 including 29-19 for shots on target. Army won 24-of-34 draw controls to gain a majority of possessions.
Siena travels to Hanover, NH and will play at Dartmouth (2-2) in nonconference action on Saturday, March 18. Draw time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
