Two-time defending MAAC Regular Season Champion Fairfield completed the conference-opening series sweep of Siena Baseball Sunday in Connecticut. The Stags captured both ends of a doubleheader, winning 10-4 in the opener and 12-0 in a mercy-rule shortened seven-inning affair in the nightcap.
Game One: Fairfield 10, Siena 4
Fairfield (12-9, 3-0) scored eight runs over their final three innings at bat to pull away from Siena (2-21, 0-3) late.
The Stags maintained just a 3-2 lead heading into the home half of the sixth. Freshman
Ryan Bates tossed six productive innings walking just one while striking out six, while
Matt Livingston rallied the Saints within a run with his first homerun of the season in the top half of the inning.
But Fairfield got the run back in the home half of the sixth, scratched across a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, and put the game away with a four-run eighth. Noah Lucier homered and knocked in three for the Stags, while Colin McVeigh went seven strong on the mound to earn the win.
Vincent DiNicola and
Aiden Stewart produced a pair of hits apiece offensively for Siena, with DiNicola smacking his team-leading third home run in the ninth.
Game Two: Fairfield 12, Siena 0 (7)
Fairfield scored in each of the first four innings punctuated by a seven-run third, and Peter Ostensen and a pair of relievers combined on a two-hit shutout as the Stags completed the sweep.
Nick Sturino homered and drove in three runs and Charlie Pagliarini and Matt Bergevin capped the seven-run third with consecutive two-run hits for Fairfield.
Livingston and DiNicola accounted for the two Siena hits.
The Saints return to the diamond for mid-week non-conference action Wednesday at Fairleigh Dickinson at 3 p.m.
