Close matches have become the norm for Siena Men's Tennis. For a second straight time and third match in the past four, the Saints' fate rested on a third set tiebreaker with their opponent.
While Siena was able to come away with a win last Friday against Sacred Heart, this weekend wasn't nearly as kind as the Saints dropped its second straight 4-3 decision, this time to Monmouth, on Sunday afternoon at Tri-City Fitness. The loss comes just two days after losing 4-3 to St. Bonaventure on Friday.
It was the most points that Siena (8-8, 1-0 MAAC) had scored against Monmouth in head-to-head meetings over the past nine dating back to 2014.
It came down to singles court #3 where
Agustin Suarez fell in a tight contest 6-1, 6-7 (4), 10-5 to Victor Castro.
Saints who won on the day included fifth-year student-athlete
Tomas del Olmo and
Jose Pablo Davila's doubles win from the #3 position over Diego Laporta and Christof Zeilor 6-3 and singles wins from del Olmo, Suarez and
Edward Vo.
Del Olmo battled back after dropping the opening set 3-6 to take the singles #2 match against Dmitry Bezborodov 6-4, 11-9.
Davila took his singles #4 match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to top Alexander Zuckerman and Vo beat Gabriel Busato, 7-5, 6-1.
Davila and Vo each notched their 13
th singles win of the season.
The Hawks improved to 9-4.
Siena will next play at Fairfield (3-8, 0-1 MAAC) on Saturday at noon at the WAC Tennis Courts in Fairfield, Conn.
