The Siena Men's Tennis program made history on Sunday by claiming its first MAAC Regular Season Tri-Championship by sweeping visiting Niagara 7-0 at Central Park in Schenectady.
It's a significant turnaround for the Saints (11-10 overall, 4-2 MAAC), who joined the MAAC for men's tennis in 1989 and has now qualified for the postseason in each of the past two seasons after a winless first season in 2015 under head coach
Jeff Osborn, who took over the program that season.
The Saints are now 25-19 over the course of the past two seasons.
Now, third-seeded Siena will be headed back to MAAC Tennis Semifinals this Saturday at 10 a.m. against No. 2 seed Quinnipiac (10-10, 4-2 MAAC) in West Windsor, NJ.
Fourth-seeded Marist (3-14, 3-3 MAAC) will take top seed Fairfield (7-9, 4-2 MAAC) in the other semifinal with the winners scheduled to play for the MAAC Championship on Sunday at 10 a.m.
Siena put it together when they needed to this weekend by earning a 4-3 win over Rider on Friday and then followed it up with Sunday's sweep of the Purple Eagles.
"Both teams (men and women's teams) came ready to play to play today," coach Osborn said.
"It was all business from the start of the match and it shows that both teams really want to keep playing. Hopefully, this will carry over to the MAACs next weekend."
The Saints took all, but one doubles match on the day.
Dante Russo and
Edward Vo as well as
Tomas del Olmo and
Jose Pablo Davila were each two-time winners on Sunday.
Playing from the #1 doubles position, Russo and Vo teamed to defeat Trevor Massi and Tanner Bedard 7-5.
At the doubles #3 spot, del Olmo and Davila topped Roberto Vaca and Rohan Srivistava 6-4 to earn the doubles point.
In singles play, Russo,
Agustin Suarez, Davila and Vo all won in straight sets. Del Olmo and Moro each rallied back after dropping the opening set to earn victories from the #2 and #6 respective singles positions.
"I'm so happy for our men, who have worked so hard to create their own history today winning the regular season as tri-champions for the first time in Siena Tennis history," Osborn added.
Niagara finished its season at 6-12 overall and 3-3 in the MAAC.
