Siena’s Comeback Attempt Falls Short in MAAC Semifinals

Saints reached postseason for seventh consecutive season

Second seeded Fairfield took down No. 3 Siena 4-3 in the second semifinal of the day, holding off the Saints' late comeback in the MAAC Women's Tennis Semifinals on Saturday at Mercer County Park Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ. 

The Stags grabbed the doubles point by way of victories at the No. 2 pairing of Francesca Karman and Lize-Alet Morkel over Reegan Mullaney and Maanya Viswanath (6-2) and at the No. 3 spot, with Laina Campos and Lucie Tuttle defeating Emma Boggiali and Laia Giralt (6-3), respectively.

In singles, Katarina Plumtree defeated Viswanath (6-2, 6-1) at the No. 4 position to give Fairfield the 2-0 edge. At the No. 6 spot, Karman took down MAAC Rookie of the Year Madeline De Faber-Schumacher (6-2, 6-2), extending Fairfield's lead to 3-0.

Siena's comeback attempt would start at No. 3 singles, when Alexa Wilson defeated Sarah Liu (6-3, 1-6, 6-1) to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Then, Giralt beat Morkel (7-6, 6-3) at the No. 2 singles position, to make the match 3-2.

The rally continued for the Saints at the conclusion of No. 1 singles with Meagan Brown taking down Paulina Bakaite (6-2, 3-6, 6-4), tying the match at 3-3.

The decider came at No. 5 singles, in which Fairfield's Aina March claimed a victory over Emma Boggiali (7-6 (5), 0-6, 6-2) to give the Stags a tournament victory over the Saints for the second consecutive year. 

Fairfield will take on Quinnipiac in the MAAC Championship on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Siena finishes its season with a 11-12 record after reaching the postseason for seven consecutive years since 2016 and eighth appearance in total since 2011.
