HOW SWEEP IT IS! SAINTS WIN FIRST MAAC MEN’S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

Siena Earns Automatic Bid into NCAA Tournament; Watch Party May 1 at 6:30 p.m.

WEST WINDSOR, NJ – Doused several times from teammates who gave him drive by water bottle showers, Siena Men's Tennis junior Jose Pablo Davila laughed in a post-championship match interview and then lamented on the team's goal of winning the MAAC Championship for the 2022-2023 season.

"It means everything," said Davila, the Mexican native, who was named the MAAC Men's Tennis Most Outstanding Player after winning three matches (2-0 singles, 1-1 doubles) over the weekend at Mercer County Park Tennis Center.

"This is what we had talked about back in the beginning of the year in September.  This was our goal—to get a ring and win the title."

Having lost to both second-seeded Quinnipiac and top seed Fairfield earlier in the regular season, the third-seeded Saints defeated both in the MAAC postseason and did exactly what they had set out to do on its way to its first MAAC Men's Tennis Championship in program history.

On Sunday, it came in brisk fashion with a 4-0 sweep against Fairfield.

Just one day earlier, the team had rallied from an 0-3 deficit to pull out a heart-thumping 4-3 thriller.

It marks the second MAAC Championship for head coach Jeff Osborn, who also led the 2021 Women's Tennis team to a MAAC Championship.

"I'm so happy for these guys," Osborn said.

"This is a memory that is going to last a lifetime for them.  You can't write it up any better.  The girls did the same thing two years ago (defeating the teams that they beaten them earlier in the season).  They deserve everything they got."

Davila referred to the "fighting spirit" that was the difference this time.

Siena took No. 2 doubles behind a 6-0 win from Agustin Suarez and Matt Nardone over Kostas Kollias and Keean Shah.

Fairfield would even the doubles portion of the match when the duo of Johnathan Olive-Blanco and Tolunay Sumer topped Dante Russo and Edward Vo (6-2) at the No. 1 spot.

In the final doubles match in the No. 3 position, the Saints' pair of Davila and Tomas del Olmo edged Alex Aguiar and Kaya Gore (6-4) to give Siena the doubles point and 1-0 lead.

The Saints' rout continued with a win at the No. 4 flight, via a 6-3, 6-2 win by Davila over  Sam Hodges.

Siena extended its lead to 3-0 following No. 5 singles, behind a victory from Vo against Kollias (6-2, 7-5).

The championship clinching match came by way of Suarez defeating Sumer (6-3, 7-5) at the No. 3 position.

Siena's Davila was named as the Most Outstanding Performer following a 3-1 tournament performance.

The Saints (13-10) earned the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and will await their next opponent and destination on Monday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m. during the NCAA Men's Tennis Selection Show on NCAA.com.
