Siena Baseball withstood a five-run ninth inning rally by Saint Peter's Friday, but couldn't do likewise on Saturday. The Peacocks struck for 12 runs over the last four innings – including six in the final frame – to stun the Saints 13-12 in Jersey City.
Siena (11-36, 5-12) had built a seemingly comfortable 10-run cushion at 11-1 following a four-run sixth, and still led by eight at 12-4 heading into the home half of the eighth inning. But Saint Peter's (7-37, 4-16) chipped away with three runs in the eighth, building momentum heading into the final inning.
The Peacocks batted around in the bottom of the ninth, sending 10 men to the plate while registering five hits. Each of the first five Saint Peter's batters reached base safely, putting the pressure on. Sam Haney, who drove in a game-high five runs, tied the game with a two-run single and then, with one out and the bases loaded, the Saints tried to turn the inning ending double play on a ball up the middle but couldn't get the trail runner at first as the winning run crossed home plate.
Siena lost despite registering 14 hits while scoring in double figures for the fourth time in the past 11 games. Five Saints registered multi-hit performances, led by the No. 8 and No. 9 hitters
Gavin Thorburn and
Donovan Montgomery who tallied three hits apiece. Five different players also notched two RBI afternoons.
Siena will take another shot at securing the series victory in the rubber game Sunday at 1 p.m.
