Box Score 2 Siena Volleyball got off to a better start during the second day of action at the Hofstra Invitational, taking the initial set against Delaware State before ultimately falling 3-1 (27-25, 7-25, 17-25, 12-25) in the early match on Saturday at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center in Hempstead, NY.
It was a strong test for the Saints, who were playing against a Hornets' team that won 24 games last season and had qualified for the NCAA Volleyball Tournament.
With the Saints clinging to a 14-13 advantage in the opening set, a
Kayla Jones kill on an assist from
Claire Isaksen gave the serve back to Siena. And, that's when
Meghan Johnsson got the Saints marching with six consecutive points including five service aces to help Siena out to a 21-13 lead.
After the Hornets fought back to tie at 21 apiece, Siena got picked up on kills by
Sara Wagner,
Olga Sawinska and
Sonja Meyer to reclaim a 24-22 lead.
Two DSU errors gave Siena its first set win of the season.
After coming out flat in the second set, the Saints fought back to force 10 ties and five lead changes in a seesaw third set before dropping it 25-17.
Siena was befallen by errors, committing 25 attacking errors and 10 service errors in the match.
Sawinska finished with a team-high 12 kills on a .310 hitting percentage.
Johnsson led the Saints with 18 assists and five service aces.
Wagner had eight kills with 11 attacking errors and 10 digs. Isaksen contributed with 11 assists and eight digs.
In the late afternoon match, Siena lost a nip and tuck battle with NJIT 3-0 (24-26, 22-25, 21-25).
The Saints had good starts, leading in all three sets, but were unable to hold.
Siena led 18-13 in the first set, jumped out to a 7-3 advantage in the second set and also led 7-2 in the third set.
Sawinski led the Saints with 11 kills on a .417 hitting percentage to go along with two blocks.
Toroslu recorded nine kills on a .500 hitting percentage with three blocks while
Oliwia Majtyka had 18 assists, eight digs and an ace.
Siena will be back in action Friday, Sept. 1 at the Bryant Invitational in Smithfield, RI, and will face the hosts as well as Lafayette and Northeastern in a doubleheader next Saturday, Sept. 2.
