Martinez Wins Roher Singles Draw in Binghamton Invite

Men’s Doubles run record of 4-0 in Sunday’s action

Siena freshman Oscar Martinez had a sterling performance at this weekend's NateRentals.com Binghamton Championships in Vestal, NY at the Lane-Starke Tennis Center.

The La Guaira, Venezuelan native swept all three of his matches in straight sets, picking up victories against competitors from MAAC rival Niagara, Buffalo and Bucknell.

Martinez defeated the Purple Eagles' Vid Maric 6-3, 6-2 in the East Quarterfinals of the Roher Singles Draw (D).  Martinez advanced to the final after topping Yunham Jiang of Buffalo, 6-2, 6-2, and capped his conquest with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph against the Bison's Brendan McDonald.

"Oscar performed especially well this weekend, remaining undefeated in singles play this season," said Siena men's tennis coach John Chiaramonte.

The Saints' doubles teams earned a perfect 4-0 record during play in Sunday's day three of action with Martinez teaming up with fellow freshman Dylan Breen to win a pair of matches against Bucknell in the White Doubles draw.

"I am impressed with the maturity our team has shown this weekend," Chiaramonte said. "We improved our record every day, learning from the previous day. This yielded a day of undefeated play in doubles Sunday."

Junior Maxwell Acri and redshirt junior Elijah Zifferblatt teamed to earn a 7-5 victory against the Army duo of Lucas Pak and Preston Achter in the Black Doubles draw.

Lastly, junior Fabio Varella and sophomore Zino Varouhas-Poole were victorious in the Green Doubles draw after topping Michael Malkin and Finn MacNamara of Buffalo by the score of 7-6 (5).

The Saints will next host Stonehill this Friday, Sept. 29 at 3 p.m. at Schenectady's Central Park.
