Siena Men's Tennis kicked off the second half of their season with a competitive 7-0 defeat at Ivy League member Dartmouth on Saturday at the Boss Tennis Center in Hanover, NH.
"We can take a lot of positives away from the match today," said first-year Siena men's tennis head coach
John Chiaramonte. "I thought the energy level was great and we were competitive on every court."
Freshman
Oscar Martinez continued to show promise after the La Guaira, Venezuela native took the middle set from junior Hikaru Takedo at the singles #3 slot.
Takedo, a Tokyo Junior Tennis Championship U18 winner had achieved an ITF career-high ranking of 165 to his credit.
Martinez, who finished the fall season with a 6-2 singles record to lead the Saints, kept his opponent guessing by mixing in a variety of shots and kept Takedo on the move before playing to a 6-3, 4-6, 10-3 defeat.
While the other Siena players lost in straight sets, coach Chiaramonte said it was the first time this season that the team was in every match and felt that the team would only improve moving forward into the season.
The Saints (1-1) will return to action next Sunday at Brown in Providence, RI with a scheduled start of noon.
