Siena Men's Tennis junior
Duarte Melo had a memorable trip to Brown.
And, for the second consecutive week, the Saints played competitively against an Ivy League member school before falling 6-1 at the Pizzitola Sports Center in Providence, RI.
"We had a lot of hard-fought sets today," said first-year Siena men's tennis head coach
John Chiaramonte.
"I like how this team has a 'next point' mentality. We are fighting every point. Congrats to Duarte [Melo] for winning his first ever Division I match."
Melo, a junior transfer, played for two seasons at Shawnee State (OH)—a NAIA school.
The Lisbon, Portugal native showed resilience in doing so by earning the victory in come-from-behind fashion.
After dropping the opening set 7-5 to Alexander Bravo at the singles #5 position, Melo rallied to take the next two sets by the scores of 6-3 and 10-6 in the tie-breaker.
In other action, the Saints dropped the remainder of the singles matches in straight sets, but stretched them out into longer matches against the Browns (2-4).
In doubles play, Brown won each of the first two doubles positions by the identical score of 6-3 while the #3 players did not finish.
Next up, the Saints (1-2) will play in the Binghamton Invitational next weekend on Saturday, Feb. 3 and Sunday, Feb. 4.
