One of the big practice points from the Siena Women's Tennis team this past week was geared toward improving their play in doubles competition.
On Sunday, the Saints proved their mettle with a clean sweep of all three doubles matches at Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island before ultimately dropping the match 6-1 in Newport at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
"We came out very strong in doubles, which was our big focus this week," said Siena head tennis coach
John Chiaramonte.
"All three teams were aggressive at the net."
Junior
Laia Giralt and freshman
Manuela Gomez picked up the first victory at the #2 position, topping the Rams' duo of graduate student Nadia Rajan and sophomore Nikki Fernando 6-2.
Finishing next,
Emma Boggiali and
Madeline De Faber-Schumacher combined to defeat Klara Nelander and Ava Grnja 6-3 from the third spot.
On the doubles #1 court,
Alexa Wilson and
Reegan Mullaney completed the sweep with a 6-4 triumph against Valentina Cvackova and Sophie Herrman.
The Saints took a heartbreaking loss at the singles #1 spot when Wilson dropped a third set tiebreaker 20-18 versus Herrman.
The remaining singles matches were in favor of Rhode Island in straight sets.
Siena Women's Tennis returns to action this Saturday at Buffalo for a 5 p.m. start.
