Siena Men’s Tennis Concludes Play at ITA Regionals

Martinez, Breen squeaked out in round of 16 doubles draw

The Siena Men's Tennis team concluded play at the ITA Regionals on Sunday at Harvard University and came away with some victories and added confidence after competing with teams from the Ivy League as well as the MAAC.

The sophomore duo of Oscar Martinez and Dylan Breen shined brightest as the pair won two matches in the doubles draw over the weekend including a win over Yale tandem Edward Liao and Zhengqing Ji 8-5 on Friday and then followed that up with a rallying victory against the Quinnipiac team of Carl Sjoholm and Yasha Laskin 8-6 on Saturday.

Martinez and Breen dropped a close match to the Harvard duo of Melchior Delloye and Mitchell Lee 8-7 (7-5) in the round of 16 at the Division I Men's Tennis ITA New England Regionals.

"It was a nice weekend," said first-year Siena Men's Tennis head coach Alex Van Cott.

"It was great to see everybody compete well at certain times.  Obviously, Oscar and Dylan were a bright spot and we'll take some confidence now into the remaining fall season. We were able to see what other teams like Quinnipiac had, who in our conference, as well as other teams like Yale and Harvard so it was important for us."

The tournament featured the top men's tennis players from across the country.

Two singles finalists from each of the 26 regions around the U.S. will have the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship.  The doubles champion from each of 13 regions will play for the doubles title.

Siena returns to competition beginning this Friday at 9 a.m. at the NateRentals.com Mocks Duals at Binghamton University.  It will be the final tune up before the ITA Conference Masters Championship in Rome, GA starting on Nov. 7
