Giralt & Gomez, Martinez Win MAAC Masters Tournament Championships

All three qualify for ITA Conference Masters Championship in Rome, GA in November

Doubles partners Laia Giralt and Manuela Gomez on the Siena Women's Tennis Team and Oscar Martinez on the men's team can now all be called MAAC Masters Tournament Champions.

The women's pair won both of their Sunday matches by beating the hosts Quinnipiac duo of Caitlin Flower and Willow Renton 6-3 and carried that momentum into a win in the finals against the Sacred Heart doubles team of Ola Irla-Bartyzel and Aina Garriga Martinez 7-5 to take the inaugural MAAC Masters title.

"It was an amazing weekend for Laia and Manuela in doubles," said first-year Siena Tennis head coach Alex Van Cott. "We have been putting a lot of work into our doubles and it showed this weekend. They did not panic and got through some tight moments throughout the tournament. I saw a lot of improvements from everyone.  I am really excited to continue putting in the work with this team and especially pleased that Laia and Manuela will be representing Siena and the MAAC at the ITA Fall Masters in Rome, Ga."

On the men's draw, sophomore Oscar Martinez continued his dominant run through the finals with another accolade to add his growing list by topping Niagara's Tanner Bedard 6-2, 6-2 to claim the men's crown at the Quinnipiac Athletic & Recreation Center on Sunday.

"Obviously, it was a great performance by Oscar this weekend," coach Van Cott said. "He was dialed in from the beginning of the tournament to the end, which showed by him not dropping a set the whole tournament. Dylan and Oscar had a good run in doubles as well and can certainly take some positives from the weekend. I'm very pleased that Oscar will be representing Siena and the MAAC at the ITA Fall Masters in Rome, Ga.  All in all, I believe everyone got better this weekend and we will continue to move forward."

Gomez and Giralt as well as Martinez now earn an automatic qualifying to the ITA Conference Masters Championship. It will have a draw size of the following, (Singles: 32) (Doubles: 32).

From this, four players will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (semifinalists). Meanwhile, three doubles teams will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship through the Conference Masters (champion, finalist, third place).

Each NCAA AQ-eligible, Division I conference will designate one singles player and one doubles team from each gender to participate in the event.  The event is scheduled for Nov. 7-10 at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, GA.
