LOUDONVILLE, NY – For a second consecutive week, Siena Women's Lacrosse will host a top 25 IWLCA nationally-ranked opponent when No. 18 Army West Point visits the Capital Region this Saturday with a 1 p.m. opening draw set at Hickey Field.
Both teams will be seeking its first win of the season after facing premier competition during the opening week of the season.
Siena (0-1) played a spirited first half against No. 14 Johns Hopkins when it led 4-2 after the first quarter and played to a 6-6 score at halftime before surrendering a six-goal spurt in a penalty-burdened five-minute stretch of the fourth quarter and eventually lost 17-9.
Junior attack
Kelly Logue had a team-high six points with two goals and a career-high four assists while seniors
Taryn Asselin and
Rebecca Gilhooley each tallied two goals apiece.
Junior
Grace Dobrzynski added a goal and her 80
th career assist to pull into a tie for the all-time program lead with Nicole McNeely.
However, Hopkins outscored Siena 7-2 in the fourth quarter.
"The message to the team was that, yes, we can be happy with certain aspects of our performance," said first-year Saints head coach
Danielle Schwan-Tetreault regarding the game versus Johns Hopkins.
"But, that's an expectation for us. I had a lot of people this week telling me that it was a really impressive game. I respect that from an outside viewer's perspective, but for us—we expect to win every game. We expect to have a strong performance from the start to the finish so that's the area of our game that we're looking to clean up."
Meanwhile, Army West Point (0-2) was tied at seven apiece with then No. 17 USC before falling 13-9 last Friday at home.
The Black Knights traveled to No. 5 Syracuse and fell behind 8-2 after the first quarter and lost 18-7 this past Wednesday.
The game will be featured on ESPN+ with Adam Cohen on the play-by-play and Danielle Lynch serving as the color commentator.
The Black Knights lead the all-time series history with the Saints 4-0 including last year's 18-14 win at West Point, then No. 13 in the country. T
The Saints finished that game well, outscoring the Black Knights 6-2 in the fourth quarter.
The teams feature key players who were both Capital Region homegrown products and former teammates in Black Knights sophomore midfielder Brigid Duffy and Saints redshirt junior attacker
Jordan Bentley.
Duffy and Bentley were high school teammates on the 2018-19 Queensbury High team that went undefeated in Section 2 Foothills League play and advanced to the NYSPHSAA Class B Regional Finals.
On the collegiate level, Duffy now holds the single-season points record (82) at Army West Point and was selected as an USA Lacrosse Preseason First Team All-American.
The Queensbury, NY native leads the Black Knights in scoring with five goals and three assists in games against #17 USC and at #5 Syracuse.
Duffy had a game-high five goals against Siena in the team's last meeting.
Bentley was a Preseason All-MAAC selection and notched a goal last Sunday against #14 Johns Hopkins.
Bentley, also a Queensbury, NY native, currently ranks sixth all-time in draw controls in Siena Women's Lacrosse program history with 68.
Bentley needs 22 more to surpass Brianna Sirianni (played from 2014-2017) to break into the top five in the category.
Bentley notched a hat trick in the meeting with Army West Point last season.
Gilhooley was also a major factor for Siena, scoring four goals and recording an assist.
