LOUDONVILLE, NY – It was a day to rewrite the history books for the Siena Women's Lacrosse program.
The Saints extinguished the program's winless record against IWLCA Top-25 ranked opponents, provided their coach
Danielle Schwan-Tetreault with her first head coaching career victory and witnessed
Grace Dobrzynski become the program's new record holder for career assists.
Contributions were from a collective team effort in the truest sense of the word.
Senior
Taryn Asselin logged a career day, graduate student
Sabrina Krasner was stout in goal and freshman
Elizabeth Wamp netted the winner with 2:43 remaining as Siena put it all together in topping #18 Army West Point 12-11 on a blustery Saturday afternoon at Hickey Field.
It was the first win by any Siena athletics program over a ranked opponent in nearly three years since the baseball team topped #23 Fairfield on May 2, 2021.
"This is just the start," coach Schwan-Tetreault told her team in the locker room following the win.
"We have so many good things to do from here, okay?"
Siena (1-1) had been in a similar situation last week when it tussled with another ranked opponent in facing then #14 Johns Hopkins, but wilted down the stretch with costly penalties.
On Saturday, the Saints redeemed themselves and pushed forward with big play after big play, not letting up for the entire 60 minutes.
Siena led 6-4 at halftime and entered the fourth quarter tied at nine all.
The game featured six ties and three lead changes.
The Saints took advantage of their woman-up opportunity when junior midfielder
Meghan Decker dodged around her defender and flung it in unassisted to tie it 11-11 with 4:02 left.
Then, came Wamp's goal that appeared to be initially saved by Black Knights' goalkeeper Anderson Strange, however the ball trickled away from her and into the net in what became the winning goal.
Dobrzynski's 81st career assist put her ahead of Nicole McNeely (2018-2022) for the program's all-time assist crown.
Her feed to
Kelly Logue with 11:45 remaining in the third quarter assured her of that.
Asselin's day included career highs of 12 draw controls, six points and four goals with two assists.
The Ashford, CT native came within one draw control of tying the program's record for most draw controls in a single game, threatening Allie Kain's mark of 13 against Central Connecticut on March 1, 2008.
Krasner came up with several key stops, including four saves on free-position shots by the Black Knights (5 for 9 on free-position opportunities).
Krasner made 12 saves.
Junior attack
Kelly Logue had two goals and an assist while
Emily Danahy recorded her first collegiate goal.
Army West Point (0-3) was tied at seven apiece with then No. 17 USC before falling 13-9 last Friday at home.
The Black Knights traveled to No. 5 Syracuse and fell behind 8-2 after the first quarter and lost 18-7 this past Wednesday.
This also marked the first time that Siena had defeated Army West Point, improving its mark to 1-4 in the all-time series.
Siena returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Dartmouth at 2 p.m.
The Big Green, who competes in the Ivy League, plays at #11 Stony Brook on Sunday.
