Trailing by a goal early in the second quarter, Siena Men's Lacrosse was looking for a spark.
What the Saints received was a roaring ignition.
Led by career days from both sophomore attack
Caden Olmstead and senior goalkeeper
Andrew Arcuri, Siena put together its most rounded performance of the early season by turning back UMass Lowell 13-8 in Lowell, Mass. on Friday afternoon at Cushing Field Complex.
Olmstead, who did not appear in any games last season, got Siena going early with two first quarter goals within one minute and 16 seconds of one another and finished with a career-high five goals.
The Binghamton, NY native has started the season with three consecutive hat tricks and now leads the team in goals with 11.
Arcuri, who was starting in just his third career game, had a stout defensive effort with 13 of his career-best 14 saves coming after halftime and also earned his first collegiate victory in the cage.
The Saints (1-2) took command of the game when it reeled off six consecutive goals from about midway through the second quarter and into the early stages of the third quarter.
After
Travis Fry netted one of his two goals,
Colby LeBlanc fired a highlight-worthy bar down shot over his left shoulder and into the top right corner of the net to give the Saints a 5-4 lead with 7:08 remaining.
It's a lead that they would not relinquish as freshman
Patrick Radomski,
Pratt Reynolds, Olmstead and
Rocco Barbero would all add goals in the coming minutes to expand the lead to five.
The Saints held a hefty 23-11 shots advantage including 14-5 for shots on goal at halftime.
The Riverhawks (0-3) reversed that trend in the second half, outshooting Siena 26-16 overall and 17-8 for shots on goal.
But, that's where Arcuri came in with much-needed assistance, corralling seven shots in the third quarter and six more in the final quarter to help Siena close it out.
Siena will host Le Moyne (1-0) for its home opener this coming Wednesday at 2 p.m.
The Dolphins beat Wagner 17-6 last Saturday and are at Sacred Heart this coming Sunday.
The Saints and Dolphins are meeting for the first time since 1987.
The teams have split the all-time series at one game apiece.
