Siena Baseball worked 10 walks and tallied eight hits, but left 13 runners and committed four errors as Appalachian State took the middle game of the series 9-4 in Hickory, North Carolina.
Appalachian State (5-1) put together a balanced attack, scoring in five different frames albeit never more than two runs in any one inning. Tommy Walker delivered the go-ahead two-run single in the second inning, and Adam Quintero knocked in a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to double the advantage.
Danny Barbero and
Nick Bergamotto each delivered their second home runs on the young season for Siena (0-5), with Barbero opening the scoring in the first and Bergamotto adding a leadoff blast in the ninth.
Gunnar Meland and
Austin Rachiele each added an RBI apiece for the Saints. Barbero, Bergamotto, and Rachiele all contributed two hits apiece.
Jackson Steensma tossed five innings allowing five hits and one run while walking four and striking out five to receive the win for the Mountaineers.
Billy Rozakis went the first five innings allowing four runs (two earned) while striking out five for Siena. Four of the nine runs allowed by the pitching staff were unearned.
Siena will look to salvage the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
