In a long match that featured four singles matches that went the distance and a doubles match that was decided in a tie breaker, the Siena Men's Tennis team was squeaked out at Sacred Heart 4-3 at the Tennis Club of Trumbull on Saturday night.
Oscar Martinez,
Maxwell Acri and
Dylan Breen all picked up wins in singles competition for a second consecutive day.
"It was a very close match with a future conference opponent," said Siena men's tennis coach
John Chiaramonte.
"We had great comebacks from Max [Acri] and Dylan [Breen]."
Playing from the number three position, Acri dropped the opening set 2-6 to junior Antoine Hernandez only to come roaring back to take each of the next two sets by identical scores of 6-2, 6-2.
Breen played from the No. 5 spot and found himself in a similar predicament after falling behind with a 3-6 setback to sophomore Arya Alla in the first set.
Breen buckled down and rallied to win the last two sets by the scores of 6-4, 6-4.
Martinez won in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 against junior Matyas Vencl.
The Saints dropped two other singles matches in a deciding third set and a tie-breaker in doubles play.
Next up, the Saints (2-7) host Buffalo (3-4) this Saturday at Tri-City Fitness in Latham.
