Giralt led No. 2 singles before match was left unfinished

Siena Women's Tennis saw a tough day on Sunday at Amherst in a 4-0 defeat at the University of Massachusetts.

The Saints (1-7) dropped the first and third doubles pairings to fall behind a point early.

Finishing first, Shelby Madeiros and Reegan Mullaney were defeated by Renata Farima and Mariana Campino 6-1 at the No. 3 doubles spot.

Competing at the top position, Emma Boggiali and Alexa Wilson then fell to Danielle Hack and Thamonpan Jonglertraukl 6-3.

In singles competition, the Saints received some encouraging performances from Laia Giralt, who was slotted at the No. 2 position.

The junior from Sant Cugat, Spain was leading sophomore Ella Faessler after winning the opening set 6-4.

While Faessler came back to lead the second set 5-1, play was left unfinished due to the match being clinched.

Giralt remained at 8-6 in singles play in 2023-2024, but the showing was a good sign in that Faessler entered with a 4-4 record this spring and had been a transfer from the College of Charleston where she was ranked No. 70 nationally.

Meanwhile, Siena head tennis coach John Chiaramonte had slotted Gautier up to the singles No. 5 position in a big spot.

While she dropped the first set 6-3, Chiaramonte felt her play was a positive.

"It was a hard-fought match versus a very strong team," Chiaramonte said.

"Laia [Giralt] stood tall against a very good opponent today.  It was great seeing Jade [Gautier] step up in the lineup at five today, playing a strong set of singles."

UMass (6-4) also received victories from Hack over Wilson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 1 as well as Jonglertrakul over Manuela Gomez 6-0, 6-0 from the three spot and Campino got past Madeline De Faber-Schumacher 6-1, 6-0 at singles No. 4.

Next up, the Saints (1-7) will return home for a Senior Day tribute beginning at 4:30 p.m. this Saturday at Tri-City Fitness in Latham with a match set to begin at 6:15 p.m. against Le Moyne.

The Saints' senior class consists of Wilson, Boggiali, Madeiros and Gautier.
