Men’s Lax Strikes Back

Reynolds, Pape and the defense shine in Saints’ victory

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Men's Lacrosse faced some difficult tasks at hand in trying to slow both the MAAC's top scorer and top faceoff specialist on Saturday against VMI.

While the Keydets' Luke Rusterucci and Jack Rogers found some success, the Saints worked together as a team and powered past VMI 11-8 with a gritty fourth quarter performance to claim a conference victory at Hickey Field.

Siena (3-4, 1-1 MAAC) raced out a 7-3 halftime advantage before seeing VMI rally back with four consecutive goals to even it at 7-7 heading into the final frame.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Saints, however, as Pratt Reynolds, Travis Fry, Ryan McCarthy and Caden Olmstead all found the back of the net.

Rogers entered as the MAAC's best, winning over a league-high sixty percent of his faceoffs and holding the top spot as far as ground balls were concerned with 47.

But, he was met with a serious challenge from Saints' graduate student Dylan Pape, who ended up winning 12 of 21 matchups versus Rogers to go along with five ground balls.

In net, Saints senior goalkeeper Andrew Arcuri put together a highlight tape of saves and finished with 10 on the day as Siena tied a season-low for fewest goals allowed with eight.

The defensive line of Siena had another strong outing with three caused turnovers apiece from Brian Mack and Trevor Marsala

R.J. Ihlefeld collected a team-high six ground balls while Mack and Andrew Rooney each had three.

Offensively, Reynolds finished with four goals and his fifth hat trick this season.  Fry notched his second hat trick in four games and Jack Cavaioli added two goals and an assist.

Siena held a 50-36 advantage in shots including 25-18 in shots on goal.

VMI (4-4, 0-2 MAAC) was led by Rusterucci, who had three goals and an assist.

No other Keydet had more than one point though.

Siena returns to action next Saturday, March 23 when they host LIU (5-1, 2-0 MAAC) in league action.

Faceoff is set for 3 p.m. at Hickey Field.

The game will be featured on ESPN+.
