Saints freshman
Oscar Martinez added to his collection of singles wins on his 2023-2024 campaign, but the Siena Men's Tennis team lost a pair of hard-luck three-set matches in what became a 4-1 defeat at the hands of St. Bonaventure on Friday evening.
The Saints (3-9) fought competitively in the doubles matches, dropping two by just two points, while
Zino Varouhas-Poole and
Maxwell Acri each pushed their matches to a deciding set.
Martinez was elevated to the singles No. 1 position and topped Archie Graham 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 to improve to 13-6 overall in singles play this season.
"We had a lot of tough three-set matches," said Siena men's tennis coach
John Chiaramonte.
"It was a great win for Oscar, stepping up at number one."
The Bonnies improved to 7-9 on the season.
The Saints begin conference play on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Niagara (6-2, 1-0 MAAC).
The Purple Eagles swept Mount St. Mary's last Saturday.
