Women’s Tennis Drops Heartbreaker to Bonnies

Boggiali, De Faber-Schumacher each notch victories for Saints

Siena Women's Tennis went the distance in five singles matches and ultimately lost a heart breaker to St. Bonaventure 5-2 at the St. Bonaventure Fitness Center on Friday.

Emma Boggiali and Maddie De Faber-Schumacher each outlasted their opponent at the singles No. 3 and No. 6 positions, respectively, but the Saints (2-8) lost three other three-set tie-breakers and dropped the other singles match on a default for medical purposes.

Boggiali, a senior and native of Rome, Italy, improved to 5-6 in singles play after finishing strong with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 win against Bonnies' junior Abbie Tyler.

De Faber-Schumacher, who switched from the No. 5 spot down the No. 6 spot, improved tot 2-0 from the singles No. 6 position this season and earned her 12th win at that spot to move into a tie for fourth place all-time in program history in No. 6 singles wins with Elora Benfer (2009-2013).

The sophomore from Phoenixville, PA rallied back for a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (3) victory against fellow sophomore Kelly Barnes.

Alexa Wilson, Laia Giralt and Manuela Gomez all dropped their singles matches in a tie-breaking third set while Jade Gautier retired from her match.

"It was a very tough match today," said first-year Siena women's tennis head coach John Chiaramonte.

"Our girls fought in a lot of three-set matches.  Credit to Maddie [De Faber-Schumacher and Emma [Boggiali] for fighting out two three-set wins."

The Bonnies improved to 7-11.

Next up, the Saints will open MAAC play at Niagara (5-8, 1-0 MAAC) on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Village Glen Tennis Courts.

The Purple Eagles won its conference opener 4-3 against Mount St. Mary's last Saturday.
