Despite wins from its top two singles players, Siena Women's Tennis dropped its MAAC Opener at Niagara's Village Glen Tennis Courts on Saturday evening.
The Saints (2-9, 0-1 MAAC) had some late opportunities to pull it out in singles play with
Manuela Gomez and
Zaara Omar winning a set from the singles No. 4 and No. 5 positions, but ultimately fought to close three-set losses.
"This was a difficult loss for us today," said first-year Siena women's tennis head coach
John Chiaramonte.
"Great wins for Laia and Lex in singles. We are focused on Fairfield."
Wilson won her No. 1 slotted match against senior Elena Mayet 6-1, 6-2 to earn her seventh singles win this season.
Giralt won her No. 2 match up against the Purple Eagles' senior Coral Rodriguez by identical scores of 6-4.
The junior has now won at least double-digit singles matches in back-to-back seasons and tied Kylie Mullaney (2017-2021) for the fourth most victories in program history from the No. 2 singles position.
Niagara (6-8, 2-0 MAAC) got picked up from its No. 3 through No. 6 singles positions, winning all four matches.
Freshman
Zaara Omar and senior
Shelby Madeiros won the lone doubles matches for the Saints, topping the Purple Eagles' duo of Jaida Borg and Enrica Favaron 6-4.
Next up, the Saints will return home to host Fairfield (2-7, 0-0) this Thursday at 12 p.m.
The Stags play its conference opener on Sunday at Mount St. Mary's at 12 p.m.
