Siena Men's Tennis played out a long day on the courts, but fell 5-2 in its' conference opener at Niagara on Saturday night at the Village Glen Tennis Courts.
Saints freshmen
Oscar Martinez and
Dylan Breen both won their singles matches, but Siena (3-10, 0-1 MAAC) dropped two of three doubles matches for the point and lost closely contested singles matches.
Martinez moved back down to the singles No. 2 position and rallied for the comeback win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Trevor Masi to move to 14-6 overall in singles play this season.
At the singles No. 6 spot, Breen had enough to best Manuel Alonso 7-5, 6-2.
Zino Varouhas-Poole and
Maxwell Acri won their doubles match together against Vid Maric and Jose Maria Garcia, but Siena dropped the other two doubles matches.
Varouhas-Poole and Acri lost especially tight matches at the No.3 and No. 4 singles spots.
Niagara improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in MAAC play.
"These were close, singles' matches," said Siena men's tennis coach
John Chiaramonte.
"I was happy for our freshmen Oscar and Dylan, adding more wins to their resume. We need to focus on the doubles point going forward."
The Saints will return home to host Fairfield (6-8, 3-0 MAAC) on Thursday at 12 p.m.
