Siena Baseball made Bard College's Honey Field a home away from home in marching out a hit parade and got off and running in a 15-10 conference-opening victory against Quinnipiac on Thursday afternoon.
Relocated to Annandale-on-Hudson due to the inclement weather, the Saints (3-19, 1-0 MAAC) reeled off its third straight weekday win and gave first-year head coach
Alex Jurczynski his first MAAC victory.
Siena took the lead for good as part of a four-run fourth inning where the Saints strung together a pair of singles from
Kobe Stenson and
Danny Barbero, a walk by
Randall Hien and advanced the bases on a muffed throw, a wild pitch and two RBI ground outs off the bat of
Austin Rachiele and
Nick Bergamotto to take a 6-5 lead.
The Saints offense was just getting going however, as it would add three more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to grab a cushy 12-5 lead.
Ulbert picked up a sac fly RBI to centerfield followed by a Hein RBI double to right that chased home Percival and Barbero knocked in Hein on a RBI single.
In the sixth, Bergamotto cracked a double that scored Rachiele and then the Saints added two more runs with aggressive base running that produced outs in being caught stealing, but also scored Bergamotto and Figueroa in the process.
Quinnipiac (6-16, 0-4 MAAC) chipped into the lead and got as close as 12-10 with three runs into the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Eight different Saints had at least one hit including four players that had multiple hits including Figueroa (3 for 5 with two runs and one RBI), Percival (3 for 5 with one run, one RBI and two stolen bases), Barbero (2 for 5 with two runs, two RBIs, two stolen bases) and Rachiele (2 for 5 with a run scored and a RBI).
Tyler Kidwell came on in relief to pick up the win after he went three and a third innings pitched while
Noah Rodriguez came on to get the save in an inning and a third of work with two strikeouts and no runs allowed.
Siena will host a doubleheader on Friday against Quinnipiac to complete the three-game set starting at 12 p.m. once again at Bard College.
