The fourth quarter rally began for Siena Women's Lacrosse, but was left unfinished as the Saints dropped a nail biting 13-12 decision at Iona Saturday afternoon in New Rochelle.
Siena (7-4, 2-1 MAAC) had its five-game winning streak snapped after allowing a critical third quarter in which Siena was outscored 6-2 in the frame behind three consecutive goals by Kira Varada and one each from Emily Stewart and Calen Norton.
Trailing 11-7, the Saints drew closer on goals from two goals from freshman
Olivia Nicholson and senior
Rebecca Gilhooley and another from junior
Grace Dobrzynski.
Gilhooley scored the last goal of the game at the 6:08 mark in the fourth quarter to make it a 13-12 advantage for Iona, but neither team was able to score for the remainder.
Draw controls, which had been a major advantage for the Saints during its win streak, wasn't as much of an advantage as it had been. Siena won the battle, but only 16-13 on the day. The Saints held a 20-7 advantage in the category in their previous game.
Iona improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the MAAC.
Siena will host Niagara this Wednesday at 3 p.m.
The game will be streamed on Siena All-Access.
