LOUDONVILLE, NY – Undeterred by a six-goal deficit, Siena Women's Lacrosse pressed on with a refocused approach on draw controls and a steely defensive effort to complete the comeback for a key 11-10 MAAC victory over upstart Niagara on a rainy and chilly Wednesday afternoon at Hickey Field.
Siena (8-4, 3-1 MAAC) found themselves behind 8-2 with 11:03 left in the second quarter when the Purple Eagles were moving their offense through with ease, highlighted by a trio of players (Lois Garlow, Rachel Crane and Andra Savage), who all had two goals apiece during the run.
With the team draw controls even at four apiece through the first quarter, the Saints began to earn a heavy advantage and won 14 of the game's final 17 draw controls.
In net, coach
Danielle Schwan-Tetreault made a switch early in the second quarter at goalkeeper to freshman
Shaylin Romero, who made three saves including a gigantic one in the closing seconds to earn her first collegiate victory.
The Saints' possession game (
Taryn Asselin eight draw controls,
Laura Bonomo four,
Grace Dobrzynski and
Mikayla Cooke two apiece) combined with the hard-nose defense led by
Jenna Colabufo limited Niagara to just four shots on goal after it opened with 10 in the first half.
Siena also got boosted by freshmen
Elizabeth Wamp, who helped spark the Saints' comeback with back-to-back goals including a player-up goal within a span of roughly four minutes to close the lead to 8-4.
Another freshman in
Olivia Nicholson scored the next goal to draw to within three of the lead with 3:25 remaining in the half.
After a goal by
Meghan Decker made it 8-6 heading into the break, Wamp struck again to complete her first career hat trick at the 14:24 mark of the third quarter.
Two goals by
Rebecca Gilhooley put Siena on top for the first time all day at 10-9 with 11:23 left.
Taryn Asselin gave Siena a two-goal cushion at 10:31 and the Purple Eagles' Lexi Braniecki scored for the final mark as neither team found the back of the net in the final 8:11.
Siena won for the fifth time in their last six games and held a heavy 18-7 advantage in draw controls.
Siena will host Manhattan (3-8, 0-3 MAAC) this Saturday at 3 p.m. in another conference match up.
The game will be streamed on Siena All-Access with Tom Schwan on the call.
