Canisius Outslugs Saints in Series Opener

Siena Matches Season-Highs of Nine Extra-Base Hits, Five Home Runs

Siena Baseball matched season-highs of nine extra-base hits and five home runs, but Canisius scored in six separate innings to outslug the Saints 18-10 in the series-opener in Buffalo.

Siena (5-24, 3-4) scored in seven different innings themselves, albeit five of those frames yielded single scores. Meanwhile Canisius (9-18, 3-4) registered four straight multi-run innings capped by a decisive seven-run seventh to pull away late.

Tyler Figueroa and Danny Barbero each bashed a pair of home runs apiece, with Barbero knotting the score at 7-7 with his first bomb in the fifth, before rallying the Saints back within 11-9 on his second long ball of the afternoon in the seventh.

But the Golden Griffins batted around sending 11 men to the plate in the home half of the seventh, doubling their advantage late with seven runs on the benefit of six hits in the frame.

Canisius slugged four home runs themselves while matching the Siena total of nine extra-base hits. Every member of the Golden Griffins lineup registered at least one hit, one run scored, and one RBI as part of a balanced offensive attack.

Figueroa was on base four times with a team-high three hits to pace the Saints offensively. Eight different Siena starters registered hits and six scored, while five apiece notched multi-hit and multi-RBI performances.

Due to the inclement weather forecast in Buffalo, the conclusion of the three-game series is now set to take place Saturday with doubleheader action beginning at noon.
