Canisius Fends Off Saints in Series-Ending Doubleheader

Griffs Complete Weekend Sweep

Canisius completed a series sweep of Siena Baseball by taking both ends of a twin bill Saturday in Buffalo. The Golden Griffins held off a late rally to take the opener 9-6, before walking off in the nightcap 7-6.

Game 1: Canisius 9, Siena 6
Siena (5-26, 3-6) mounted a late rally scoring six unanswered runs over the final two innings, but it wasn't enough to overcome what proved to be an insurmountable 9-0 deficit through seven.

Canisius (11-18, 5-4) scored in five of the first six innings highlighted by a four-run third to pull away early. Jackson Strong homered twice while Trent Rumley added a home run and knocked in three runs to pace the Golden Griffins.

The Saints got on the board thanks to a two-run single by Gavin Thorburn in the eighth, before making things interesting in the ninth. Austin Rachiele delivered a two-run double, before scoring on a two-run homer off the bat of Danny Barbero.

Justin Giuliano went the first seven shutout innings to earn the win for Canisius, allowing just two hits while walking only two and striking out 11.

Game 2: Canisius 7, Siena 6
Siena once again rallied – this time from down as many as four runs early to draw even in the ninth – but Canisius walked off in the final frame to secure the series sweep.

The Golden Griffins built a 5-1 lead through three before the Saints halved the deficit on a two-run double by Kobe Stenson in the fourth. Stenson later added a home run to draw the Saints within one in the eighth, before Barbero launched his fourth home run of the series to knot the score at 6-6 in the ninth.

But with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Canisius No. 9 hitter JC Spinosa doubled before advancing to third on a passed ball. Another ball in the dirt then chased Spinosa home with the winning run.

The Saints return to play when they travel to Dartmouth for midweek action Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in Hanover, New Hampshire.
